IB2024 Benchmarking Workshop – Highlights from Our Annual Event

From November 19 to 21, 2025, the European Benchmarking Co-operation (EBC) hosted its annual International Benchmarking Workshop IB2024 in the Netherlands, bringing together water sector professionals from across the globe to share knowledge, tackle challenges, and shape the future of the industry.

 

Day 1 – Welcome Reception

Participants arrived in Utrecht and gathered for an informal welcome reception, setting the stage for two days of intensive knowledge exchange and collaboration.

 

 

Day 2 – Key Discussions & Networking

The workshop officially began with a plenary session led by Peter Dane (EBC), followed by introduction speeches from Vitens and KWR, our hosting partners.

Highlights include:

  • EIB’s Water Resilience Programme – Marco Beroš from European Investment Bank presented the updated Climate Bank Roadmap.
  • Analysis Tracks on Sustainability, Asset Management, and Finance & Efficiency, moderated by sector experts.
  • Climate Footprint & CSRD Compliance – Insights from Vewin, KWR, Waternet, and aquabench.
  • Asset Management & Water Losses – Best practices from MPWIK Warszawie and Oasen.
  • Climate Action – Hydro-intelligence for extreme weather management and water retention strategies.
  • AI & Water Technology – Innovations in energy efficiency and nature-based water purification.
  • R&D & Sustainable Energy Solutions – Strategic industrial synergies and heat recovery initiatives.
  • GHG Accounting – Operational insights from Germany’s water sector and hanseWasser Bremen.
  • UWWT Directive – Implementation challenges and compliance strategies from Krakow Water.
  • Utility Management & Water Availability – Risk management and resilience practices from Vilniaus Vandenys and EYDAP Athens.  

 

City Tour & Celebration at Paushuize

After a day of insightful sessions, participants stepped out to experience the beauty of Utrecht with a guided city tour, exploring its historic canals and architectural gems. 

The evening continued at the elegant Paushuize, where the Workshop Dinner offered a perfect setting for networking and reflection.

One of the night’s highlights was the Benchmarking Coordinator of the Year Award ceremony, celebrating the outstanding contributions of coordinators who have gone above and beyond to strengthen collaboration and benchmarking excellence. This combination of cultural discovery, fine dining, and recognition made the evening truly memorable.

 

Day 3 – Inspiring Presentations & Site Visit

Before wrapping up, Day 3 featured forward-looking sessions, including:

  • Recovering Resources from the Water Cycle – Olaf van der Kolk (Aquaminerals).
  • Value Creation & Sustainability Reporting – Experiences from Dunea, Vitens, and Tampere Water.
  • Smart Water Control – Digital transformation journeys from Saudi Arabia and Oman.
  • Tariff & Investment Planning – Strategies from Waterbedrijf Groningen and HSY Helsinki.
  • EYDAP’s KPI Initiative – Collaborative best practices for performance measurement.

In the afternoon, participants visited KWR and the Tull en ’t Waal site.
