The IB2023 Summary Report highlights the main results of the annual benchmarking exercise for water- and wastewater services in Europe. Also, it showcases identified best practices and presents participants' experiences.
In the 2024-cycle 40 water supply and wastewater utilities from 16 different countries participated. Together they serve a significant number of consumers across Europe and beyond.
The IB2023 Summary Report first of all provides an overview of the key results of the performance assessment that was carried out in the exercise, showing scores and median values for 20 key performance indicators for drinking water- and wastewater services. Moreover, the report shows trends in the development of the selected performance indicators over the last 5 years. The 20 indicators represent a part of the total number of indicators that has been analysed in the benchmarking exercise, in the output domain (Access, Water quality, Reliability, Customer Service, Sustainability and Finance & Efficiency), in the throughput domain (like Governance, Management, Strategy & Policies, Business Planning, HRM, R&D and Asset Management) and to measure progress in reaching the UN SDGs.
For drinking water the report presents indicators like population coverage, quality of supplied water, mains failures, services complaints, affordability, inefficiency of use of water resources, cost coverage by sales revenues, PPP-corrected average water charges and mains rehabilitation.
For wastewater indicators like population connected to sewers, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) compliance, sewer and connection blockages, total complaints, affordability, wastewater treatment energy consumption, cost coverage by sales revenues, PPP-corrected average wastewater charges and sewer rehabilitation.
Next to presenting 20 key indicators, the Summary Report describes several participants' good practices.
